Williams doesn’t stand much of a chance with out budget cap
Williams F1 deputy team principal Claire Williams has said that only three teams have a chance to win races, and Williams is currently not one of them, this why we need budget caps.
The daughter of the team founder Frank Williams attended a meeting with Liberty Media and came out and said, “Let’s crack open some Champagne.”
This was because the reported plans for a $150 million budget cap starting in 2021 had just been unveiled.
“That’s not to say we were on the brink, but with the financial disparity between teams, the likelihood of Williams’ survival into the medium and long-term was looking pretty bleak,” Claire Williams said.
Williams has had a bad start to 2018 and it’s not improved, this is reportedly due to a cooling issue and Claire Williams suggests that without changes with budget cuts she is not upbeat about the future.
Winning
“When I started, I really thought we could win again. Now I do not believe that anymore,” Claire Willimas said to German news outlet Blick. “Our sport is basically broken.”
Willimas once was a dominant force in F1 but haven’t won a title since 1997. That was with the outspoken Jacques Villeneuve and no win since 2012 which was with the crash king of F1 Pastor Maldonado.
Claire Williams went on to say: “It’s naive to believe that if you just work hard, you’ll be rewarded. Except for the top three teams, nobody will win in the future. The financial discrepancy compared to Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull is just too big. It’s impossible to keep up. And it’s sad. [true story]
“If the new Formula 1 owners actually push the $150 million budget from 2021, we could survive,” she added.
However, Williams acknowledged that the team also needs to do a better job straight away.
“There are teams with less money than we have who are doing a better job,” she said.
Williams issues are compounded by the fact that they have two inexperienced drivers. Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin, both of which have brought there way into the team. Williams had a choice of Sirotkin or Robert Kubica but went for Sirotkin as he brought more money to the team. This in many peoples opinion is part of the problem.
Kubica is a much more experienced driver, but by Williams taking the money instead of the experience then perhaps this shows how much turmoil the sport is in with the divide between the top three teams and the midfield teams.
FOM need to try and make Formula One a bit more of a level playing field.
