 A step forward with upgrades

Fernando Alonso has said that McLaren’s Barcelona upgrades are “a step forward”. McLaren arrived in Spain with various upgrades, most notably an upgraded front wing.

McLaren struggled in qualifying so far this season and is yet to make an appearance in Q3. Although Alonso and Vandoorne have picked up 36 points in the opening four races, with McLaren sitting fourth in the constructor’s standings.

Alonso was confident with the new package, saying: “It was a step forward. From the inside I think there was more performance in the car, I felt better. I felt more grip,” the double-world champion said.

“I think the conditions were tricky today with the wind and the hot temperatures but I felt the car better so definitely a step forward. We will see tomorrow how much we will improve compared to the others. Overall I think we are a little bit more competitive than any other Friday, so hopefully, Q3 tomorrow for the first time is a real possibility, let’s try to maximise that.”
