The incredible 18-year-old is targeting a possible 2018 race seat in British F3 as the FIA announced a change in allowing disabled drivers to compete in single seaters.
Former British Formula 4 driver Billy Monger inspired not only the motorsport community but the world when he publicly documented his recovery from losing his lower legs in a racing incident in April earlier this year.
Despite jumping back behind the wheel of an adapted Fun Cup Endurance race car in July, just less than three months since his accident at Donington, Monger has since set his sights back on single seaters.
Discussing the possibility of a return to a mainstream motorsport championship, Monger stated his plan was “to get back into a single seater race car for 2018.
I had a meeting with the FIA, and some rulings that were in place before, about single seaters being not an option for disabled drivers, have been overruled.
Obviously, the support I’ve had has been incredible, but I’m looking forward to getting back behind the wheel and doing what I love: being my old self and being known as a racing driver.
Billy, also known in the racing community as BillyWhizz, said that British F3 was the plan and that “hopefully” that would be the championship he would be racing in next year.
The news comes after the FIA Prize Giving, which hosted Monger last week. Receiving a standing ovation as he walked onto the stage with the aid of a pair of crutches, Monger was awarded the President’s Award from Jean Todt.
Since his racing accident in April, Monger has been praised for his positive attitude and enthusiasm to continue with his love of motorsport. He has found himself many high profile fans, including four-time F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton.
